Carolina Donat Vargas
Ram贸n y Cajal Program
Pharmacist and Doctor in Preventive Medicine and Nutritional Epidemiology from the University of Navarra (2007-2016). During her postdoctoral stay at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), she specialized in toxicology and environmental epidemiology (2016-2019). Currently, she is a Ram贸n y Cajal researcher in the group. Her main lines of research have encompassed the relationship between exposure to various contaminants through food and water and their impact on chronic diseases. In the field of nutrition, she has published significant epidemiological studies on the benefits of polyphenol and olive oil consumption on health, including their effect on breast cancer, cardiovascular diseases, mortality, and frailty. She is currently leading an innovative project called BREMI, which investigates the presence of pesticides in breast milk and their impact on the microbiota and the baby’s health, a topic of great relevance to public health and of growing social concern. This study will also explore how the quality of the mother’s diet and lifestyle influence the microbiota, the immunological composition of the milk, postpartum depression, and the incidence of diseases in the child during the first year of life. The BREMI project represents a confluence of Dr. Donat’s various fields of expertise, promising to provide valuable insights at the intersection of nutrition, environmental toxicology, and maternal and child health.
